SOLAS 2004 Regulations require ships to have affixed signs / symbols on or in the vicinity of life saving, fire fighting appliances, directions, escape routes and other indications as required. The signs / symbols are to illustrate the purposes of the device / controls and the procedures for operating the appliance and to give relevant instructions or warnings. They are to be capable of being see under emergency lighting conditions and are to be flurescent as required for passenger ships.

The signs / symbols are type approved by the Maritime Safety Committee of the IMO and conform to design, size and colour (white on a red, blue or green background), depending on their designated purpose.
The signs / symbols are for directions to survival craft locations and for display inside survival craft or adjacent to the relevant control or function to which they refer. Signs / symbols may relate to totally enclosed lifeboats or conventional open lifeboats and davit-launched liferafts, depending on the type of survival craft they are intended for. In addition, symbols in the appropriate sequence can be displayed as a reminder of actions required to launch the survival craft.
The above stipulations apply in a similar manner to the signage of fire fighting equipment and other emergency appliances.
An additional set of symbols has also been approved by the Maritime Safety Committee. These signs / symbols are intended to indicate the location and direction to emergency equipment, and muster and embarkation stations.
Where symbols are used to indicate direction or the stowage position of life saving equipment and fire fighting equipment, they conform in design and colour (white on a green background), respectively (white on a red background), (white on a blue background) and to the recommended IMO size.
